Zhejiang University Introduction

Zhejiang University is a prestigious institution of higher education with a long history, located in Hangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and a scenic tourist destination. The predecessor of Zhejiang University, Qiushi Academy, was founded in 1897 and is one of the earliest modern higher education institutions founded by Chinese people themselves. In 1928, it was named National Zhejiang University. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhejiang University relocated its campus to the west and spent seven years running schools in Zunyi, Meitan, and other places in Guizhou. In the autumn of 1946, it returned to Hangzhou. In 1952, when the national colleges and universities were adjusted, some departments of Zhejiang University were transferred to sister colleges and universities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The main part of Zhejiang University that stayed in Hangzhou was divided into several single discipline colleges and universities, which later developed into the original Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. In 1998, four universities with the same roots and origins merged to form the New Zhejiang University, embarking on a new journey of creating a world-class university. In the 126 year history of education, Zhejiang University has always adhered to the fine tradition of "seeking truth and innovation" as its motto, taking the world as its own responsibility and truth as its destination, gradually forming the common values of Zhejiang University people of "diligence, moral cultivation, discernment, and steadfastness" and the spirit of Zhejiang University of "embracing the river, enlightening truth and virtue, opening up the world for the people, and building our country".

Zhejiang University is a comprehensive, research-oriented, and innovative university with distinctive characteristics and significant influence at home and abroad. Its disciplines cover 13 categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary studies. It has 7 departments, 39 professional colleges (departments), 1 engineering college, 2 Sino foreign cooperative schools, and 7 directly affiliated hospitals. The school currently has 7 campuses, including Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan, and Haining, covering an area of 7931901 square meters, with a total library collection of 7.982 million books. By the end of 2022, the school has 65821 full-time students, 5123 international students, 9746 teaching staff, 24 full-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 21 full-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 14 senior professors of liberal arts, 120 distinguished professors of the "Yangtze River Scholars Award Program" of the Ministry of Education, and 193 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In 2022, Zhejiang University was selected as a university for the second round of "Double First Class" construction, and 21 disciplines were included in the list of first-class discipline construction. The vast majority of disciplines made gratifying progress in the fifth round of discipline evaluation.
